W3C Validation

Introduction

I moved to Ireland in 1990. In order to be allowed to live here, I had to prove I was self sufficient enough to remain on the condition I didn't take any work an Irishman could do. I was told I would have to return to the local Garda station every year to have my passport and Alien Certificate of Registration stamped with 'Permitted to remain in Ireland another year provided he does not seek employment or engage in any business activity.' - I may study in Ireland. Oddly, owning rental property isn't considered a business activity.

After 5 years of visa renewal, I was to be given permanent residency. Well, by year 5, they had changed their minds and I'm still registering annually; only now I must prove I have my own private medical insurance so as not to be a drain on the state should I fall ill.

I have received comments from Irish friends regarding my "Pros and Cons" section. They are all critical of the negative aspects listed. All I can say is that if I were to list the 'cons' in my own country, they would dwarf those found here - if that's of any consolation. This does bring up the fact that Ireland has changed, i.e. it has become nouveau rich bourgeois while losing many of its "old ways" - sadly. The love story, "This is my Father", with James Caan and Aidan Quinn touches upon the soul of this country which made these people who they were until they became "Ameriginised" (my word for Americanised and homogenised).

Any one interested in what preceded my arrival in Ireland and how I have fared up until now may access my autobiographical page.
